Christchurch to Picton Road Trip: Is Kaikōura Worth It?Yes. With the route's middle stretch hugging the Pacific so closely you could throw a stone from the driver's seat into the surf, it's definitely worth it. The drive itself will take you around 5 hours, covering 340 kilometres up the picturesque east coast on State Highway 1. Kaikōura is the halfway point, about 180 km and 2.5 hours from Christchurch, and it's the reason to slow down. With its proximity to the ocean, there is some amazing seafood that doesn't get fresher. Stop and grab fresh crayfish at Nin's Bin or seafood chowder at the Store. You'll also find sperm whales feed off the coast year-round, dusky dolphins travel in pods of several hundred, and the fur seal colony at Point Kean puts seals a few metres away for free. It's an ideal stop for freedom camping if you're travelling using certified self-contained vans. North of Kaikōura, the highway threads between cliffs and ocean on a stretch rebuilt after the 2016 earthquake. Pull-over bays sit right on the waterline.
