Auckland Campervan Hire at a Glance
Big Little Campers runs campervan hire from a depot at 1/9 Brigade Road, Māngere, around 10 minutes from Auckland Airport. All three vans are certified self-contained, so you can enjoy freedom camping at DOC and council-approved sites across the North Island. Pickup is quick from the airport by Uber or local rideshare, usually under NZD $10, and the team walks you through the van before you drive off.

Best Routes from Auckland
Auckland is the North Island's natural launch point. Beaches north and east, geothermal country south, and shorter daily drives than the South Island, so you spend less time behind the wheel and more time parked up somewhere good.
Auckland → Bay of Islands
Around 3 hours north via State Highway 1. Beaches, history at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, and dolphin-filled bays. An easy first leg with a good mix of freedom camping and holiday parks along the way. A relaxed first-night option is Wenderholm Regional Park, around 45 minutes from the depot.
Auckland → Coromandel Peninsula
Estimated 2.5 hours east via State Highway 2 to Thames, then your pick of the coast. Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach are the headliners, with quieter spots if you know where to look. Winding coastal roads, so take it slow.
Auckland → Rotorua
Expect 3 hours south through the Waikato. Geothermal parks, bubbling mud pools, and Māori cultural experiences. Pairs well with a stop at Hobbiton near Matamata on the way.
Why Self-Contained Matters
A self-contained campervan carries its own toilet, fresh water, and greywater storage. These features are required if you wish to experience overnight freedom camping at hundreds of DOC and council-approved camping spots. Every Big Little Campers van is certified self-contained. Learn more about what this means in our self-contained guide.
Access to the best free camping spots. Lakes, beaches, and forest clearings off-limits to non-certified vans.
Flexibility to adjust your plans. Change plans on the day without hunting for a powered site.
Lower nightly costs. Freedom camping offsets the daily rate over a longer trip.
Legal compliance with NZ rules. Stay the right side of council bylaws and freedom camping regulations.
Proper waste systems on board. Toilet, fresh water, and greywater properly kepy and handled in the van.
Why Big Little Campers
Big Little Campers is an independent, family-run operator with vans designed and built in New Zealand for New Zealand conditions. We started BLC because the existing options didn't suit the trips we wanted to take, so we built campers we'd want to travel in ourselves.

Can I do a one-way hire from Auckland to Christchurch?
Yes. Pick up in Auckland and drop off in Christchurch (or the reverse). We often need to relocate vans between depots and sometimes offer one-way hires from as little as $1 per day, occasionally covering ferry or fuel when the relocation is urgent.
How does pickup from Auckland Airport work?
Pickup is from our depot at 1/9 Brigade Road, Māngere, around 10 minutes from the airport. Take an Uber or local rideshare (usually under NZD $10) from the terminal. We don't run a shuttle, but YourRide can collect you directly outside arrivals. Plan around 30 to 45 minutes at the depot for the walk-through.
