What to Plan Around When Going One-Way
It's pretty straightforward to do a one-way trip, but it does take a little extra planning to make everything run smoothly. Here are a few things to keep in mind before you hit the road:
1) Choose Your Starting Island Wisely
Flying into Auckland puts you near buzzing city life, geothermal hotspots, and surf-friendly beaches. If you kick things off in Christchurch, you're closer to alpine passes, glacial lakes, and some of the most scenic driving in the South. Both routes are great—it just depends on the kind of landscapes you want to explore first.
2) Book Your Ferry Crossing Early
Will your trip be taking you from the North to the South Island, or the other way around? Then you'll need to reserve a spot on the Interislander or Bluebridge ferry. Campervan spots are limited, especially in peak season. Booking ahead will give you more control over timing and help you avoid last-minute stress.
3) Time Your Drop-Off around Your Flight
Wherever you plan to finish your trip, make sure your drop-off and flight line up. It's a good idea to give yourself an extra night in your final city, just in case you want to repack, grab a proper shower, or make room for weather delays.
4) Stock Up Near Your Pick-Up Point
Once you leave the city, supermarkets and fuel stops can get spaced out. Grab groceries, water, and basic gear while you're still near town. That way, you can cruise into your first few days without needing to scramble for supplies.
