About
Located about 3.5 km north of Matapouri in Northland, New Zealand. Situated right at the river mouth adjacent to Sandy Bay Beach, accessible via a sealed road off Matapouri–Twin Coast Discovery Highway. 3 freedom camping sites are located all along the coast of Twin Coast Discovery Hwy.
Operated under Whangārei District Council’s freedom camping bylaw, the site permits certified self-contained vehicles only, allowing one overnight stay from 5 pm to 9 am. Facilities include non-flush toilets, potable water taps, rubbish bins, and public BBQs.
Arrive early (before 4 pm) to secure one of the 5–6 bays, as spots fill quickly, especially in summer.
